Harry’s Story

My wife and I got married March 3, 1983, and moved to Miami. She had always been a good church-going girl and frequently asked me to go to church with her. Over the next 30 years she continued to go to church regularly and managed to get me to go along a few times each year.

I had attended church regularly as a child but it was really a Sunday babysitting service for my mother. Because of that, I’ve always been skeptical about "organized religion.” I’ve always believed in God; you can't love the outdoors and nature and not know that God created our wonderful world.

When we moved back to Savannah, we became close friends with some Compassion Christians. They invited us to go to church with them several times, and we went. As time went by I saw how God had had such a profound and wonderful impact on all their lives and those around them in the Compassion Christian family. My wife and I began to attend church regularly - together.

A little later I had the good fortune to get to know some of the pastors on a personal level. For the first time I saw and met people who were truly working to make other people's lives better and help them know Jesus. My discussions with them convinced me that my belief in God’s existence and my commitment to following "The Golden Rule" was just not enough.

My wife had given her life to Christ years before, but after much conversation and prayer we came to the decision that we should both dedicate our lives to God and accept Christ as our savior. I met with Ken and we planned the baptism, and then we asked the people who had been part of our journey to witness it. They agreed, and that day was the beginning of the rest of our lives.
