James’s Story

My life used to be all about work, making money to pay the bills. There was a lot of turmoil. We had money problems, but there were family difficulties too. My dying father-in-law was living with us and my wife was taking care of him all by herself. Relationships with her siblings weren’t good. She was battling depression because of all the stress. I was at my wits’ end and needed help.

My daughter attends Compassion Christian and I started going to church with her. After several weeks I finally got up the courage to ask for help. At the end of the service I walked to the front. Cam brought someone over to pray with me. At the end of the prayer session I felt instantly better, like a great weight had been lifted from my shoulders.

A few weeks later, my wife joined me at church. At the end of the service I took her to the front with me to ask for more prayers for us and our burdens. This time my wife said how much better she felt afterward.

On the Saturday before Easter, my whole family went to church. That was the night Cam challenged us to publically accept Jesus Christ as our Savior and to come down to be baptized. I looked at my wife and said, “I am going to do it!” She looked into my eyes and said, “I'm going with you!” So we walked down to get baptized together. Later my wife told me that even with so many people in the church, she felt like Cam was talking directly to her!

Going to Compassion Christian has brought great peace into my life. I’m learning more and more about God, and reading the Bible has taught me I can't do this alone. I have joined a Life Group, attend church weekly, read the Bible and talk to God.

Walking this path together with my wife has brought us closer to each other and also to God. We have also met many wonderful people. God has filled a great void in my life. I wish I had done this fifty years ago!
