Laurie’s Story

I grew up in a two-denomination home. My mother was a Catholic and my father was a Methodist. My parents did not have me baptized as a baby because they wanted to let me make the decision myself.

When that time came, I went through the baptism classes at the Catholic school I attended. However, when the nun would not answer my questions and told me not to worry about them, I decided that the Catholic faith wasn’t where I needed to be.

I was baptized in the Methodist church when I was 21. I was very happy there for many years and became very involved in the church leading the children’s programming.

When my daughter was 11 years old, she told me she didn’t want to go to church on Sunday mornings anymore because she was the only child in her age group and was not engaged in the programming. At that time I was feeling burned out because of my church responsibilities. I didn’t feel filled in the church and was very concerned that my daughter wasn’t benefitting from it either.

I decided to leave our small church and begin looking for somewhere that would welcome us and make us feel at home. I have many friends who attend Compassion Christian and I did a lot of research and a lot of talking to them before we started attending services the first weekend in 2013.

For the first six months, I came to church every Sunday and just filled my soul with God’s wonderful words. I studied at home as well and prayed, but I didn’t join in anything and didn’t volunteer. I just needed to be filled for a while. I was so burned out.

During the Easter service, I debated going up to be rededicated. The only thing that stopped me was knowing that my daughter had expressed a strong desire to be baptized.  I wanted to be rededicated when she was baptized and be part of her special day.

We were baptized together at the end of the summer. I cannot express the joy of rededicating my life to Jesus or the utter joy of being part of my child accepting Jesus as her Lord and Savior.  I was so filled with the Spirit that night.

Thank you, Compassion Christian, for giving us a home.  We are so happy to be a part of the family.
