Maggie Makes A Difference

Can a 10-year-old girl make a difference in the world?

Maggie Dyer found a way.

Earlier this year Maggie attended a praise service here at Compassion Christian during the Faith Promise celebration. Faith Promise is a time we focus on our hearts on God’s command that we share His love around the world.

She heard the story about starving children in Mhondoro, Zimbabwe. As part of our Global Outreach efforts, we partner with missionaries there who show God’s love through a school which provides both education and nutrition through a protein-packed porridge kids drink from a cup. The financial support of people here at CCC feeds not only children’s bodies and minds, but their souls, too.

At that praise service Maggie heard the story and took home a cup the church provided to remind people throughout the year of those kids drinking from a cup.

Months passed and summer came. Like other kids her age, Maggie had wanted to buy a portable music player. Her parents told her she’d have to earn the money herself. She set up a lemonade stand at her family’s Tybee Island home.

Her parents had taught Maggie to give and save money first, then to spend it on herself. Maggie decided she would give her tithe to those children in Africa. She even brought the cup to the stand to help collect money.

By summer’s end Maggie had raised enough to buy her music player and to stash some away for savings. She decided to give more than 10% of the $600 she earned to missions.

This past Monday Maggie brought $100 to Global Outreach pastor Dave Stewart, who had arranged in advance for missionary Denford Chizanga to call while Maggie was visiting.

“Monday the timing was perfect as I showed her a photo of Denford and explained who he was. He called my cell phone right on cue. I answered, turned to Maggie and said, ‘He wants to speak to you!’ She was thrilled and so was I. Denford was very gracious and talked with her about the kids in Zimbabwe,” Dave said.

Maggie’s visit to Dave will be one of her last to CCC for a while. Her family moved to Tucker this week.

“We plan to stay in touch,” Dave said. “Needless to say, Maggie's story inspired me to keep working hard, knowing that God's message is getting through and often we can learn lessons of faithfulness from the youngest among us.”
