Worship Matters

As a worship leader, I am constantly wrestling with the question, “why does worship matter?”

As I’ve interned here with the Compassion Christian Church launch team my view of Worship has deepened. Worship is not a once a week event or a scheduled time frame.  True worship is constant, life-changing and empowering.  It's a lifestyle.

Worship is the choice we make when we surrender our day to God and let Him steer us in the direction He would have us go.  It's constantly communicating with Him and asking for His guidance and direction.

I’ve been reading “Worship Matters" by Bob Kauflin.  It really illustrates the importance of loving God and how much easier it is to worship something you love.

"God wants us to love Him more than our instruments and music,” Kauflin said in the book. “More than our possessions, food, and ministry. More than our family. More than our own lives. And when loving Him becomes a matter of infinite importance to us, we're beginning to grasp the heart of worship."

So, if worship is so much more than music, why do we need times in our services for music?

Picture a family coming to church.  The mom and dad get in an argument on the way because the kids weren’t ready on time. Now the whole family is running late. The kids are complaining about getting up, wearing nice clothes, and having to go in the first place.

As they come into church, they are each carrying suitcases packed with recent conflicts, anger, confusion and grudges. After lugging all of that through the doors to their seats, they are expected to listen to a message, be happy, and give their tithes.

Fortunately there is a time for unpacking. The Worship at the beginning of each service is a time when we can drop everything we carried in and surrender all we packed during that day, or during our life.

The music gives us an opportunity to empty ourselves so that there is room for the message to fill us back up, so we can leave unburdened and refreshed.

Shout for joy to the Lord, all the earth. Worship the Lord with gladness; come before him with joyful songs. Know that the Lord is God. It is He who made us, and we are His; we are His people, the sheep of His pasture. Psalm 100
