Who Needs Christmas?

Started on November 27th, 2016

Does anybody really need Christmas? Do we need the decorating, entertaining, gift-giving, spending … the gathering, singing, worshiping, thanking? Why do we expend so much energy on these things?

Maybe it's because at the first Christmas everybody needed what Jesus came to bring, no matter who they were: the rich and powerful, the outcasts, the lonely, the forgotten ... everybody. And maybe, we all still do!

Christmas is a celebration of a gift that is powerful, life-changing and eternal … a gift everybody needs and anyone can receive! This may be the year you discover that you need Christmas!

Faith Promise: Love Over Fear

Started on November 6th, 2016

We hear the admonition “fear not” over and over again in Scripture. Clearly our God knows we are fearful creatures. And the evil one wants us to fear. He uses it as a way to paralyze us, to cause us to doubt God’s faithfulness and our purpose.

So how do we overcome fear? Scripture seems to suggest that it’s a choice. With confidence in our Savior, we choose love over fear as a church. And this has been our battle cry: “There is no fear in love, but perfect love casts out fear.” (1 John 4:18 ESV)

We choose to fix our eyes on the One who conquered fear and death. Sometimes we may not even realize we’re doing it. Sometimes it takes every ounce of courage we can muster. Sometimes it takes great sacrifice. Every time it is worth it.

Thriving in Babylon

Started on October 2nd, 2016

What happens when you find yourself in a godless society? What if you lived in a culture where belief in God was met with ridicule or threat? Would you stand tall -- bold and confident in your faith -- even if it meant risking everything? Or would you cave into the cultural pressure and play it safe, keeping your head down and your mouth shut?

The book of Daniel is about a courageous, godly man who stood tall, refusing to conform to culture. With the power of wisdom from God, Daniel not only survived, he thrived in Babylon, influencing an entire kingdom as he did. Daniel’s story is ancient, but learning from it will change your future!

This is Compassion

Started on August 14th, 2016

When Jesus came to earth, He intentionally impacted people’s lives. Everyone He encountered experienced struggles, sickness and difficult situations. But the messiness of their lives didn’t keep Jesus away. It compelled Him to draw even closer. That’s compassion.

Compassion is often underestimated or misunderstood. It’s not about knowing how to fix someone or their problems. It’s about giving our time, skills and resources to make a difference and then leaving the rest up to God.

Join us as we explore passages of Scripture that show us how to follow Jesus’ example and inspire us to draw close to people around us. Choose compassion. See what happens.

Faith Promise

Started on November 4th, 2015

How would you complete this: “Love is                   ”?

How do you define love? How does our world define love? Probably many different ways. The definition, however, is clearly spelled out for us in 1 John 3:16.

“This is how we know what love is: Jesus Christ laid down His life for us. And we ought to lay down our lives for our brothers and sisters.” - 1 John 3:16

We follow the example of sacrificial love we see in Jesus. We go to the ends of the earth, helping those most in need and sharing with them the good news of Jesus’ love. We see people coming to know Jesus as we work with more than 20 international partners to provide clean water and nutrition in Africa, mentoring in Central America, education in Eastern Europe and church planting in India. We are also intentional about making a difference in our communities here at home.

Together we have an impact that none of us can as individuals, taking the love of Jesus to the nations.

As strange as it may seem, many people actually believe that and order their priorities in pursuit of God’s wisdom above the riches of this world.  Ironically, those who put wisdom above money tend to have more of both.

In this series we’re exploring the wisdom of God concerning the making, management and deployment of the resources He places in our hands.  Don’t miss a single week as we walk “The Ways of the Wise.”

Christmas Through the Eyes of …

Started on December 4th, 2013

Every year the holidays bring a wide spectrum of emotions: from great loneliness and fear to immense peace and joy. It’s been that way since the beginning.

We’ve read the first Christmas story so many times, we often overlook how painful, joyful, scary even outrageous the events must have been for the people involved.

Mary, an unwed teen, found herself pregnant, and her story wasn’t exactly believable.  Her fiancé, Joseph, had to work through confusion and even anger at first. The shepherds, outsiders working on the edge of society, were terrified and then surely shocked at the unexpected love and acceptance they received when God included them.  And the wise men must have questioned their own wisdom as they followed the leading of God in their lives … in a totally unique way!

Yet the peace and joy that only Jesus could bring settled into the heart of each one, just as it can settle into ours today.

Every day in Christ is a resurrection from death, every rising sun a reminder of His greatness and goodness. A heart filled with gratitude is joyful, humble, constantly aware that we have received so much more than we deserve.

And as we consider our greatest blessings – church, family, country – we remember that these blessings are signs of our Father’s great love for us. Because He loves us, we are thankful that we can show His love to others and see what happens!

We gaze at babies and say they favor their parents. At family gatherings, we tell children they look like their mothers or their fathers. We look at our own children and see ourselves, feeling a sense of pride that they are undeniably ours indeed.

The resemblance can become remarkable. We can become so like our Father that when people see us, they see and experience Him. We can become undeniably HIS.

The Life of Jesus

Started on February 24th, 2013

If you love someone you want to be near them. The Bible is the story of God coming near. God came near to the world by leading his people through His prophets like Abraham and Moses. God came closer by establishing a nation for His people and building a temple where He would be present with them. Now God has come closer than any would have believed because God has come in the flesh.

In the past the prophets described the gracious and glorious God, but now people are hearing the very words of God from the mouth of Jesus and seeing God's response to people in the actions of Jesus. God has come near, and with that nearness, the truth has been clearer than ever before.

The last part of the Old Testament is a message of hope.  Once again, when no one else could help,  our loving God intercedes and makes a way for His people to return to the land they love and the God who loves them.

Of course, this sets the stage for a response.  Some will be threatened by a God they don’t understand and act out their fears.  Others will offer that good God their love and loyalty for a life time.  Sadly, like thoughtless children, some will be quickly distracted and experience the pain that comes when we marginalize a God who deserves to be in first place!

This final chapter of the Old Testament shows us the blessed life of those who put God first and the consequences of putting Him anywhere else.

A summer book study of I & 2 Peter

Ever traveled overseas and felt completely out of place? No one thinks like you. No one talks like you. No one lives like you.

That’s how fully-devoted followers of Christ feel today. We’re citizens of the Kingdom of God as we move through this world. We’re for this world, but not of this world.

Our beliefs about what’s right and what’s important are often in conflict with our culture.  It’s easy to grow discouraged and confused, to feel the gravity of two worlds pulling us in opposite directions.

That’s exactly how believers felt 2,000 years ago. A man named Peter wrote letters to those believers to clear the chaos. His godly wisdom can encourage us today as we live for Christ as strangers in a strange land.

Are the wedding gifts waiting to be unwrapped? Or is the china chipped and the towels a bit timeworn?

After the honeymoon comes a long stretch of life. Newlywed bliss can settle into everyday “just married and going through the motions.”

The Bible teaches that marriage can be more. What if there was a way to have a new marriage with the same spouse?

Join us for “Just Married?” This new sermon series will explore what needs to change to create a marriage – and a love – that lasts a lifetime.

“Behold, I make all things new.” Revelations 21:5

Christian Atheist

Started on February 12th, 2012

“They claim to know God, but by their actions they deny Him.” Titus 1:16

We say we believe in God. And we do. We store information about Him in a far corner of our mind.

But when it comes to real life, we worry all the time. We don’t think God is fair. We’re ashamed of our past.

So what’s going on? We call ourselves Christians but then we often live as if God doesn’t exist and His promises aren’t true.

There’s good news. We can examine our faith in an honest, deep, real way and begin moving toward a more authentic God-honoring life. True Christianity awaits. Find it!

The Blessed Life

Started on January 8th, 2012

What’s the secret to a blessed life? To a life of abundant joy? To a mind at peace and a heart content? Is it even possible?

Imagine if God changed your heart from selfish to generous. How would your life be different? What if your love for God changed how you spend your time, how you invest your talents, how you use your financial resources?

Our God is a generous God. We can’t out give Him, but we can experience the joy of trying. Our life can bear fruit beyond what we dreamed. Welcome to the blessed life.

Christmas Conspiracy

Started on December 4th, 2011

The story of Christ's birth is a story of promise, hope, and revolutionary love.

The Christmas season is a time to love, to feel the ultimate peace He brings, and to celebrate our newborn King with complete abandon, with an overwhelming passion.

So what has happened? When did this celebration turn into stress, traffic jams, and shopping lists?

What if Christmas became a world-changing event again? What if we reclaimed this holy season?

It’s time for a Christmas Conspiracy.

Forgotten

Started on November 5th, 2011

Ever grown discouraged as you seek to do God’s will? Ever been ridiculed or reviled for living out your beliefs? Ever felt lonely, even invisible or ignored, as you serve humbly and quietly?

Don’t lose heart. You're in good company. Sometimes the greatest good is done as we persevere in tough circumstances.

Remember this. Those who are out of sight and out of mind here on earth are never out of God’s heart.

The unKNOWN God

Started on October 9th, 2011

Finding our way to Truth

In ancient times a missionary named Paul visited Athens and saw an altar inscribed “To The Unknown God.”

Today, centuries later, many of us still worship an unknown God. We practice religion. We try to do the right things, but something is missing. It feels empty.

The good news is that the living God - who crossed heaven and earth to reveal Himself to us in Jesus - wants to be known. This is the stark difference between religion and relationship. We can know God! And He wants to be KNOWN by us.

Join us as we continue our study of Acts and examine how Jesus changes everything.

Igniting a world wide web of faith

When Christianity was new, it exploded. Believers couldn’t stop talking about Jesus. Addition turned to multiplication as the number of new believers grew exponentially. Village after village lit up with Christianity, igniting a world wide web of believers.

Today the good news is still great. Are we still amazed? Still urgent to reach the ends of the earth?

Alive on Impact

We all fear a head-on collision. Should we?

People who follow God hit the ways of the world head-on. The force of impact can rock us, creating either deep pain or divine passion.

When Christianity first hit the world, the church came alive on impact. We can, too.

This changes everything

Part of a study of the Book of Acts

Can you imagine it? All together the disciples wait. Jesus, in whom they placed all hope and belief, was gone, leaving only His promise that the Holy Spirit would come. Suddenly like a loud, rushing wind from heaven, the Spirit arrives.

And in that moment - recounted in the book of Acts - everything changed. The course of the world made a mighty shift. The trajectory of our own lives began to turn.

Acts is our story, the ancient story of how Christianity began and changed how we all encounter God. Today, as we study the age-old text, what can we learn about ourselves and our God? What can we discover about our lives as we examine a time when Christianity was bursting forth with a new power?

Find out how Jesus changed everything as we begin our in-depth study of Acts.

Come Alive

Started on March 13th, 2011

Can we make a tree grow? Can we, by our own will, force it to develop deep roots, expand its trunk, extend its branches, sprout leaves, and bear fruit?

No. We can't.

We can, though, cultivate the ground, plant a seed, and water a growing plant. If we do the right things consistently, a powerful force takes over. A tree becomes rooted and grows into a towering giant.

What about our spiritual life? Are there ways of cultivating growth? Of placing ourselves before God so He can transform us? So He can make us fully alive and give us the power to flourish?

Join us as we talk about things we can do, ways we can cultivate our daily lives, to open ourselves to God's power to work and bring change.

"I am the Vine. You are the branches. If you remain in Me and I in you, you will bear much fruit. Apart from me you can do nothing." John 15:5

Status Update

Started on February 13th, 2011

What's your status? What's tapping from your fingertips or slipping from your lips? Anger? Greed? Jealousy? Anxiety? Hate?

Where'd that come from? What's welling up inside? Filling your heart and overflowing?

What we speak and do is based on what's in our heart. The only way to update our real status is by changing our heart.

The good man brings good things out of the good stored up in his heart, and the evil man brings evil things out of the evil stored up in his heart. For out of the overflow of his heart his mouth speaks." Luke 6:45
